MUSIC DIRECTOR SEARCH
The Waukesha Area Symphonic Band is currently seeking a new music director to begin in the 2018-19 season. During the 2017-18 season, we will audition our selected finalists.
The Waukesha Area Symphonic Band (WASB) has just completed its 40th season. Its forces are 70- 80 musicians strong who enjoy working at a high level of performance. Many of our members are musicians by vocation, while others have a background of extensive musical training but enjoy other professions. Our repertoire spans the “war horses” to music recently composed with so much great literature in between. WASB has also commissioned and premiered a number of new compositions. Check out the list of recently performed music.

Special thanks to our search committee; our chairperson Nancy Herro, our members; Cynthia Eisenmann, Jason Feucht, Chris Hoefer, Gary Huber, Don Huenefeld, Zach Jones, Scott Mohr, Rebecca Oestreich, Gail Schroeder-Hoffman and Keith Tetting. Thanks also to our doorman and greeter, Kurt Eisenmann!
We had fourteen interested candidates that either contacted us or we were asked to contact. Nine of those invitees sent resumes and the requested videos of their conducting. After thoughtful discussion, we invited six of them to in-person interviews with the committee. All of the candidates were well qualified and enthusiastic about leading the band, the entire committee was impressed with all of the candidates. After two lengthy meetings, with considerable discussion, we chose two candidates to each direct either the Fall or the Spring Concert, this coming season.
Dr. Walter Rich will be conducting the Fall concert and Dr. James Ripley will be conducting the Spring concert. The concert choice was decided using a coin flip. The band will be asked to evaluate each conductor immediately after each concert (written form with optional comments), so please be prepared to spend a few minutes, on stage, after each concert.
We had considerable discussion regarding the Holiday concert and the format will stay the same; with chamber groups for the first half and either a guest conductor for the second half or volunteer conductors from the band’s membership. If we have more volunteer conductors than time, we can randomly select the conductors. We have time to decide the procedure and would welcome your suggestions.
Thanks again to all of the candidates and committee members for their time and efforts.
Thank you, we are looking forward to an exciting concert season!
